Marrakech is a city from which I have fond memories of travel. It is really apart, very authentic. Its spirit, its traditions, its riads, its cuisine, Marrakech has many qualities. This ancient imperial city, where the dynasties of the Almohads, the Almoravids and the Saadians succeeded each other, is also very rich from an architectural point of view.
- The Koutoubia is a religious building from the Almohad and Almoravid dynasties. This mosque is also called the “mosque of booksellers”, for its role as a souk of manuscripts for merchants. The minaret of Koutoubia is particularly famous, especially for its architecture. A short walk in the vast park around the Koutoubia is to do.
- Then, in the Kasbah district, it is possible to reach the Saadian tombs. They date from the 16th century, but their discovery and restoration only dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. One can observe the tombs of sultans of the Saadian dynasty, exceptional for their decoration.
- Direction the Bahia Palace, a 19th century building, ideal for discovering the beautiful Moroccan architecture. The visit of this palace allows you to discover how Ahmed ben Moussa lived with his 4 wives and 24 concubines. The different rooms of this place are decorated with marble, paintings on wood, stained glass and sculptures. The patios are superb. Today, part of this 8,000 m2 palace is open to visitors and hosts art exhibitions. The other, private part, is used as accommodation for the Moroccan royal family.
Afternoon: Visit of the souks and the Jemaa-El-Fna square
- The essential souks of Marrakech. This place is really very characteristic of Marrakech, it is a must, which pleases ... or does not please. You can walk in the narrow alleys where the small souks follow one another. Mopeds, locals and visitors wander from all sides. This is the perfect opportunity to discover traditional Moroccan objects (slippers, carpets, tea sets, etc.). You can also get drunk on the good smell of spices and enjoy this special atmosphere. We must prepare to be constantly challenged to enter the shops and negotiate the prices strongly.
- Go to Jemaa-El-Fna square. This popular UNESCO-listed location is home to merchant stands. You can see snake charmers, musicians or even fire eaters. To enjoy this place “quietly” and take photos, the best thing is to have a drink in a nearby cafe and join the terrace. The square is particularly lively at the end of the afternoon, around 5/6 p.m.
