Day 3: Atlas Studio Movie and Palm Oasis of Skoura.
Skoura is the first step on the road of 1,000 kasbahs between Ouarzazate and Tafilalet. According to legend, it was founded in the 12th century under the Almohad dynasty.
The palm grove takes its name from the Berber tribe who lived there at that time, the Haskourene. Since then, several populations have followed one another, including the Arab tribes from Tafilalet, making Skoura an Arab territory in Berber country today.
If Skoura Intramuros, modest and discreet, does not leave an imperishable memory and is not distinguished from these small towns which follow the road of the thousand kasbahs, it is quite different from its vast palm grove with maintained cultures, with a rich historical past and with ancient buildings often restored and famous for some.
The palm grove of Skoura is a veritable labyrinth, of around 50 km², practicable both by car and on foot. Palm trees, olive trees, and almond trees shelter from their shadows, according to the course of the sun, the arid paths leading to earth mansions some of which date from the 17th century.
It’s a lovely stopover before going on, not far away, to the Almond Valley, the Rose Valley, as well as the Dades and Todra Gorges and Valleys.
Skoura palm grove
The Skoura oasis is made up of a group of small adobe villages and kasbahs linked by a maze of narrow paths and paths bordering the crops in the shade of the numerous palm trees and fruit trees.
Kasbah in Skoura
Within the palm grove the many palm trees, but also the olive and almond trees plant the decor in harmony with the kasbahs dating from the 17th century for some. These adobe fortified constructions are numerous here, and often can be visited.
The impressive Amerhidil kasbah was built by the master of the Qur'an of Glaoui in the 17th century.
The visit of the interior courtyard and the apartments allows us to understand certain rules of community life in such a building: the 5 windows of the prayer room symbolizing the 5 pillars of the Koran; the 4 towers serving the 4 women of the owner. A small museum exhibits objects from everyday life and an olive press.
